A model of the interpreter's role that argues the interpreter should accurately transfer a message from one language into another. Mahdavi (2020) describes it as a mechanistic metaphor that allows the interpreter only a non-thinking role, rather than one in which the interpreter plays an active part managing the situation. The model presents interpreting as 'something that can occur automatically' (Mahdavi, 2020, p.10).

The skill of managing the interaction in order to facilitate the flow of communication while ensuring that everyone is kept informed of what is happening.

An interactional management trigger is an occurrence in the role-play that is intended to require candidate to manage the interaction in order to facilitate conversation.

Triggers may include, but are not limited to, overlapping input, long turns, noise interference and technical issues.
