This module lets you explore the history of interpreting and interpreters, so you can learn how the practice has evolved from utilising no technological tools to using Computer Aided Interpreting tools and AI. You will also gain an understanding of today’s technology landscape for interpreters. You will then learn how automatic speech translation works, exploring its limitations and the risks it poses. The final section of the module will demonstrate why AI literacy and human guidance are essential assets in an AI-driven world by exploring ethical and legal considerations relating the use of interpreting technologies, AND reviewing professional standards relating to confidentiality, privacy and accountability.
